HISTORY / BACKGROUND

The Faculty of Indigenous Health Sciences and Technology, established on 1st March 2021, is one of the four founding faculties of the University. Since its inception, the faculty has been dedicated to promoting excellence in education, research, and innovation in the interdisciplinary fields of Indigenous Medicine, Indigenous Health Sciences, and Technology.

The primary objective of the faculty is to disseminate knowledge and foster academic and professional development that supports the advancement of indigenous healthcare systems. It aims to integrate traditional knowledge, practices, and cultural experiences with modern scientific and technological approaches to healthcare. Through this integrated approach, the faculty aims to establish a sustainable and holistic framework that enhances the quality of life and overall well-being of individuals and communities.

Technology Holds the Keys to Achieving a Vigorous Society…

The faculty of Indigenous Health Sciences and Technology (FIHST) at the Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine welcomes creative young scholars who can face the challenges of invigorating future society by blending novel technologies with traditional knowledge systems.

Currently, the Faculty of Indigenous Health Sciences and Technology enrolls 300 undergraduates annually aiming to indigenous knowledge and experiences into modern health concepts.

To create ground-breaking inventions and to achieve what has been impossible so far with the application of existing techniques, students should not be content to simply acquire knowledge and understand scientific principles. In addition to the learning that kind of knowledge, students must master both traditional and novel technology, which will enable them to create new technologies and make dreams come to life.

Moreover, the faculty is committed to conducting research that validates and enhances indigenous medical practices, encouraging evidence-based applications, and developing innovative technological solutions tailored to local and global health challenges. It also strives to produce graduates who are equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, enabling them to contribute effectively to the healthcare sector while preserving and promoting indigenous heritage.

Through collaboration with local and international institutions, the faculty endeavors to expand its academic reach, promote knowledge exchange, and position itself as a center of excellence in Indigenous Health Sciences and Technology.
